Welcome
Hello! My name is Amy Appleton, and I am a community artist, organizer, and educator. I'm using this site to post photos and information about my artwork and my work in community in hopes that it can contribute to this growing field.
My visual artwork consists of mainly acrylic painting, while my community work uses media that interests the people I work with: mosaics, paint, digital photography, etc. I have a real interest in large scale, public art projects that involved many people in their creation. I love it when participants can see their work exhibited or point to it on the street and proudly declare "I helped do that!"
Community art has the power to connect people to their community, build relationships, develop confident leaders, and produce art that is collaborative and meaningful. In my opinion, community art is what happens when art isn't just for art's sake, when everyone's voice can be heard, and when social justice and education meet creative expression in order to make a difference.
